Robert Alexy, born in 1945, studied law and philosophy at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen. He wrote a dissertation entitled “A Theory of Legal Argumentation” (Theorie der juristischen Argumentation), published in 1978, for which he received the award of the Philologico-Historical Class of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. In 1984, he qualified as university lecturer for public law and legal philosophy in the faculty of law at the University of Göttingen. His thesis, submitted as his Habilitationsschrift, was entitled “A Theory of Constitutional Rights” (Theorie der Grundrechte). After teaching as a lecturer in Regensburg and Kiel, he received offers of a chair from both institutions, and accepted, in 1986, the offer from the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel. In 1991, he declined an offer from the Karl-Franzens-University Graz to become Ota Weinberger’s successor. In 1997, he received an offer from the University Göttingen to become Ralf Dreier’s successor, which, again, he declined. From 1994 to 1998, he was president of the German section of the International Society for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR). He has been, since 2002, a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen). Since 2008, he has been awarded honorary doctorates, doctores honoris causa, by the University of Alicante, the University of Buenos Aires, the University of Tucumán, the University of Antwerp, the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, the Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima, the Brazilian Federal University in Teresina, the Charles University in Prague, the University of Coimbra, the Brazilian Federal University in Porto Alegre, the Brazilian Federal University in Belo Horizonte, the Universidade do Oeste de Santa Catarina (Brazil), the Brazilian Federal University in Rio de Janeiro, the Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá, the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Santa Fe (Argentinia), the University of Saragossa, the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno (Peru), the Catholic University in Brasilia, the Unversidad Libre in Bogotá, the Brazilian Federal University in Vitória, the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia), the University of Tallinn (Estonia), the Brazilian Federal University in Recife, the University Tlaxcala in Mexico, the Magna Graecia University in Catanzaro (Italy), the Universidad Major de San Andrés in La Paz (Bolivia), the Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Goiána (Brazil), the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas in Manaus, the Universidade Estadual in Boa Vista (Brazil), the Brazilian Federal University in Boa Vista, the Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego in Trujillo (Perú), and the Universidad Católica de Santiago del Estero (Argentinien). In 2010, he was awarded the First-Class Distinguished Service Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2013, he received the Science Prize of the City of Kiel.
